When raising and owning alpacas, there are certain things you need to have on your farm, you need correct shelter, proper fences and gates to keep them in, and to keep them safe, the correct equipment, separate paddocks for moms and crias, males, breeding and extra paddocks for rotating if you have enough acreage.
Alpaca Shelter
For shelter, You need to have a covered area or barn that has enough room for your alpacas to come inside out of the weather, to come in and eat to keep their food and hay from getting wet, and to have pens that are undercover incase you need to keep one or two alpacas locked up for any reason.
Alpaca Safety
Making sure your alpacas are kept safe is a big key when running an alpaca business, not only is it a sad thing that you would lose an alpaca either to a predator or it getting out because of the lack of locks on gates or a hole in the fence. There are two ways to keep your alpacas safe, the mandatory one is making sure you have the correct fencing and gates. And the alternate way which may be very useful if you are out far in the country and have a predator issue, is guard dogs. The most used dogs for alpaca guarding are Great Pyrenees, they are very useful for not only keeping your alpacas safe, but other animals such as chickens, ducks, sheep and even your family (which is not an animal!). The cost depends on how much training they have gotten. So your looking at about $300 to $1000 dollars.
Paddocks
Males and need their own separate fields. Why? Because if males and females were put together, she would get pregnant by that one, and that one would get this one pregnant, and you dont know whos getting who pregnant and when or if they are going to be due! So keep them separate!
Gelding a male alpaca
If you own fiber boys or have a male thats not really breeding quality, you may need to geld. If your in the situation of "I got fiber boys just to start out and see what having alpacas are like, I dont know if I want to breed them or not", then you need to decide, do you like having those fiber boys as a pet, and you like collecting their fleece (Their fleece will stay softer if you geld them at around 18 months), or am I ready to take the next step and get some females and start breeding? After you have made your decision, you need to call your vet that handles livestock in your area and ask them their costs and what needs to be done and continue on with your vets and your discussion.
